AI in Figma is no longer just a helper for everyday repetitive tasks.
It’s gradually starting to take part in the actual process of creating design itself.
While these updates certainly speed up the workflow, they also carry a risk: devaluing the real craft of design.
For now, the new features will likely be used mostly for generating simple pages. But imagine the moment when AI doesn’t just rely on an existing design system, but can actually build one on its own before anything else is created.
Of course, this update is still in Alpha and will clearly be rough in the beginning. But let’s not forget — in just three years we went from GPT-3.5 to GPT-5. The pace of development is staggering.
The market, led by Figma, will inevitably try to find balance. Providing AI services is expensive, and full automation would make large design teams unnecessary. That’s a direct threat to the business model — you don’t slaughter the cow that gives milk. If staff cuts lead to fewer subscriptions, companies will suffer heavy losses.
Still, competition will force compromises. And step by step, the balance of power may begin to shift against us.
Perhaps the time has come to highlight our role more strongly — as strategists, coordinators, and empathetic creators, not just tool operators.
It’s exciting, but also deeply concerning.
